The clip was just the beginning of the fun. Front and center at the 2012 Oscars is a heartbreaking film ? one nominated in five categories, including Best Picture and Best Actor ? about a family reeling from the tragic loss of its matriarch. I’m talking, of course, about “The Descendants.” Here’s the thing: there was a second film this past year that followed a largely similar story arc (far more successfully, which is to say far more gut-wrenchingly and believably) and yet it hasn’t factored at all into awards-season chatter. The film in question is “We Bought a Zoo,” and it absolutely deserves a Best Picture nomination.

Co-writer/director Cameron Crowe pulls off the impressive trick of spinning what could have easily devolved into a maudlin cryfest into an affecting film about loss and trial-and-error recovery. Matt Damon plays Benjamin Mee, a man who recently lost his wife to cancer. His son has just been expelled from school, and if it weren’t for the help of his precocious 7-year-old daughter, he might not be able to get his kids dressed and their lunches packed each morning. Things are not going well. A change is needed. And so, just like the true story on which the film is based, Benjamin hauls his family away from town and into a new house ? one that just so happens to be planted in a deteriorating zoo.

Listen, I can tick off all the ways this movie is one of my favorites of the year. Damon gives perhaps his most mature, fully developed performance to date. The supporting cast is richly drawn and there are a whole lot of laughs throughout. The soundtrack, like all those in Crowe’s films, rules. What I’ve really been thinking about recently, though, is why “Zoo” didn’t pop this awards-season while “Descendants,” which struck me as phony and featuring a loathsome egomaniac of a main character (albeit one portrayed ably by George Clooney), has become an Oscar sweetheart.

Do the old white guys who comprise the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences not like Crowe? Well, they have nominated him three times in the past, and he won once for his “Almost Famous” screenplay. Do voters believe movies featuring a colorful cast of animals are just a little too Disney? Do they have a selective aversion to earnest films, favoring something unbearably schmaltzy (Best Picture nominee “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close”) over the sweetness and realness and movie magic-tinged verve of “Zoo”?

Silly questions, all. There’s ultimately no parsing the behind-the-scenes scheming and in-front-of-the-buffet-table glad-handing that separates an Oscar darling from an Oscar never-was. So screw it. I’ll just look forward to the arrival of “We Bought a Zoo” on DVD in April.

According to the statement, the foundation will focus on “youth empowerment and equality by addressing issues like self-confidence, well-being, anti-bullying, mentoring and career development and will utilize digital mobilization as one of the means to create positive change.”

“My daughter’s foundation was born out of her passion to create a better world where people are kinder and nicer to one another and are accepted for who they are, regardless of how different they may be,” Mama Germanotta said. “She has experienced many of the struggles that our youth encounter today, and identifies with the lasting effects they can have without proper support. Together, we look forward to creating a new movement that will engage and empower youth and accept them as valuable members of our society.”

I say troubling because, really, the Grammys have never been cool (and there is something like five decades of empirical evidence to back up that claim), and voters bestowing the night’s top award on an indie act ? instead of Eminem, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, each of whom were also nominated ? was a hip, hip move. So it stood to reason that, if one of the stuffiest of award shows could get with the times, then perhaps everyone could. Perhaps the Arcade Fire’s AOTY win fractured the space-time continuum itself, sort of like on “Lost,” when Benjamin Linus turned that wheel and the island started skipping through time and there were actually two islands, one existing in current time and one that was stuck in the 1970s, and that old woman had a pendulum and Jack ended up detonating a hydrogen bomb with a rock or something (“Lost” definitely got confusing for a while there).

What I am trying to say is that it is not entirely inconceivable that, post Arcade Fire, there now exist two Grammy Awards: the one where Led Zeppelin has zero wins (but Sheryl Crow has nine) and the one where cool bands take home the biggest awards. You know, the actual Grammys versus the bizarro Grammys.

It’s an insane theory, yes, and yet, it is also (sort of) backed up by this year’s Grammy nominations. In actuality ? given she had one of the best-selling albums of the past decade and almost single-handedly saved the industry in 2011 ? Adele is not only one of the night’s most-nominated artists, but she’ll probably end up walking away with the most golden gramophones, too. In fantasy, Bon Iver stuns the Dog the Bounty Hunters of the world and takes home three-quarters of the “Big Four” awards. In the grand cosmic scheme of things, I suppose either is probable.

Shoot, at the very least, the theory makes the Grammys a lot more interesting … and impossible to predict. Still, I’m going to try my best. So here are my theoretical picks for the 54th Grammy Awards, where I’ve weighed the actual against the bizarro in a misguided attempt to predict just who will triumph in the night’s biggest categories. Hey, it’s better than just saying “Adele is gonna win everything.” Even though she probably will. It is just a theory, after all.

“Actual” Grammys: Dude, come on, Adele wins this one by a mile.

“Bizarro” Grammys: The most bizarro winner would probably be Rihanna, who’s not exactly celebrated as an “album artist,” or maybe Bruno Mars, though, thanks to “F— You” (much-nominated at last-year’s Grammys) and his string of hits this year, he seems to be a favorite among voters.

Continuum-Uniting Winner: Remember in 2009, when Taylor Swift’s Fearless won AOTY and everyone got all upset? Well, it was the year’s best-selling album, too, and at the time, Swift was credited with keeping a sinking industry afloat. Adele’s 21 has sold nearly as many copies as Fearless … and has done so in less than a year. So, uh, yeah, she’ll win this.

“Bizarro” Grammys: Got to be “Holocene,” which on the surface, doesn’t stand much of a chance. Still, I can’t shake the feeling that Bon Iver wins something on Sunday, and so, much like Arcade Fire’s Album of the Year win last year …

Continuum-Uniting Winner: … I’m going with the bearded dude from Wisconsin. Look, voters aren’t going to give Adele everything, most likely because they don’t want to deal with the backlash. There’s also the Arcade Fire momentum from last year, not to mention the fact that since this award goes to not only the artist, but the producer, recording engineer and mixer, too, it tends to go to classically constructed tunes (Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody,” Alison Krauss’ and Robert Plant’s “Please Read the Letter”) as opposed to songs with massive commercial appeal. So I’m taking “Holocene” for the upset.

Well, after a massive year, she was ignored everywhere else in the “Big Four,” so a BNA win would be a nice olive branch extended by Grammy voters. Also, no hip-hop artist (male or female) has won this award since Lauryn Hill in 1999, and how bizarro is that?!? So fittingly, Best New Artist is hers.

“Yeah, big deal!” Aniston said, insisting that most of the talk around the scene was just sensational. “Isn’t that a good, fun headline? That’s what happens.”

“Wanderlust” ? fans can preview an exclusive clip when we launch our “First” special Wednesday at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com ? takes place at a commune, where two down-on-their-luck New Yorkers, played by Aniston and Rudd, seek refuge. And when you consider that “Wet, Hot American Summer” helmer David Wain was behind the camera, nudity may seem tame. For Aniston, the scene was just another part of the job.

“At that point, we had been shooting the movie for two months, two-and-a-half months, and the amount of things that we were asked to do that we were just like ‘All right,’” Aniston said. “At that point, that was like putting on my shoes.”

The duo share the experience of onscreen skin, a fact Aniston felt compelled to share. “You’ve shown your butt,” she said to Rudd.

“Many times,” he replied.

“And onscreen as well,” Aniston joked. “In the makeup chair, he always never had clothes on.”

“I had to get dressed for the shots,” Rudd replied. “But when we weren’t shooting, I was hanging brain, as it were.”

For Aniston, nudity has to matter for where the character is heading in the story, and a crazy, purposeless nude scene would never work. “I think it depends on what the movie is. It felt like it would be gratuitous to do that in a movie like this and it would be more distracting from the movie and what was happening to the character,” she explained. “It would all be about, ‘Oh, you’re naked, so it’s boobs onscreen,’ so it would totally lose the fun and the empowering moment [my character], Linda, was having in that scene.”

One of Aniston’s co-stars, however, does show a fair amount of skin, even if he’s wearing a prosthetic penis.

“Joe Lo Truglio, the first night he came out with his prosthetic penis, within five minutes we were all touching it,” Aniston revealed. “We were touching it, and we were examining it. It was just so interesting. It was just right there, underneath it. I think first night of shooting, I could resist, there was the beginning of many, many butt slaps.”

According to the Hollywood Reporter, “Justin Bieber: Just Getting Started” is scheduled for release in September. The singer’s second official photo book comes on the heels of “First Step 2 Forever: My Story,” which was released in October 2010 and sold more than one million copies in 25 languages.

The new book will include information about the 17-year-old singer’s most recent tour and the making of his record-breaking concert documentary, “Never Say Never,” as well as the sessions for Believe. Among the bold-faced names that have popped in so far to lay down tracks for that album are fellow Canadian Drake,? who has long wanted to work with the pop star.

Kanye West? is also reportedly slated to contribute to the disc, which is scheduled for release later this year. Super-producers Pharrell, will.i.am? and rapper Lil Wayne are among the other names that have been tossed about as possible collaborators. Believe is the follow-up to the Christmas-themed Under the Mistletoe, which was released in late 2011.

Given his advancing age and the influence of a new group of collaborators, the effort is promising to be a step in a new direction for the multiplatinum teen idol. “The only conversation we’ve had about Justin’s album that we’re about to do is it’s really important that it’s the proper transition, because we’ve seen him [with] ‘Baby,’ now we’re watching him grow up,” Bieber’s longtime vocal producer, Kuk Harrell,? told MTV News in November. “And we can’t just throw him into the adult game right away. It has to be the proper transition. There’s a record in between.”

In the meantime, fans will have to settle for watching Bieber help re-launch MTV’s iconic “Punk’d”? hidden-camera show, which relaunches next month with a rotating slate of guest hosts.
